  •  Tales of Tennessee

It is not often that a New Zealander gets taken seriously in the American country music industry, let alone achieve sufficient status to teach University courses in such a bastion of country music heritage as Tennessee USA. In a classic 'Coals to Newcastle' story, Kiwi fiddler Colleen Trenwith is doing just that.

Her pedigree was established in this country as early as the late 1960s when, as a founder member of the Hamilton County Bluegrass Band, she embarked on a musical career that saw the band host their own television series ('Country Touch'), tour Australia with country icon Slim Dusty, and travel to Nashville to play at the 'Grand Ole Opry' - the ultimate for any country musician.

In 2008 Trenwith took up an opportunity to study music at The University of East Tennessee, and after two years was enlisted as a full time tutor. Prior to leaving New Zealand, she spent several years on the Kapiti Coast, collaborating with several local acts including country rock duo ' Legal Tender', guitarist Andrew London's 'Hot Club Sandwich' swing trio,  and 5-piece country band 'The Cattlestops'.

Taking advantage of Trenwith's flying visit to NZ this Winter, Legal Tender's Ian Campbell (guitar) and Moira Howard (bass guitar)  have teamed up with London (guitar, banjo, piano and mandola) to join Trenwith in a show called 'Tales of Tennessee', in which she presents a selection of stories and music accumulated over a 40 year career on the stage, focussing on her most recent experiences in and around Tennessee.

The repertoire will range from Country, Western Swing and Bluegrass tunes popularised by artists such as Guy Clark, Gillian Welch and Alison Krauss to original songs by London; well-known for his humourous and satirical slant on Kiwi culture.

'As far as we're concerned' says Legal Tender guitarist Ian Campbell ' Colleen is a national treasure. She's trodden a path that most Kiwi musicians can only dream about - especially in such an American- dominated genre as bluegrass music. It's an honour to walk out on the same stage'.

  • "The Backyard Bluegrass Tour"
The Hamilton County Bluegrass Band exploded onto the New Zealand folk and country music scene in 1968, the first group to popularise bluegrass music. In its heyday, anchoring a widely enjoyed TV show on Saturday evenings, touring the country and representing country music three times in a national music awards event, it became one of NZ’s best-loved outfits. After extensive Australian touring with Slim Dusty, the band became the first, and only, NZ group to play the Grand Ole Opry. They are still the top-selling country group on the EMI label. Some folks reckon they're playing better than ever.
Three decades later, four of the founding members are playing regularly again. Colleen Trenwith(fiddle), Paul Trenwith (banjo), Alan Rhodes (guitar) and David Calder(mandolin) now have Tim Trenwith playing the bass. The group still enjoys a special place in the hearts of Kiwis, with a finger-pickin’ good repertoire of traditional and original tunes.

Legal Tender is a Kapiti Coast duo, which performs extensively throughout the country. They are seen regularly at major festivals and venues, sometimes expanding the line-up with guest musicians. Moira Howard (bass) and Ian Campbell (guitar) combine powerful vocal harmonies with their instruments, and their excellent mix of material includes original and well-known contemporary country songs.

With these two fine acts on the same stage, there is a unique blend of Country, Bluegrass and Folk music. It ensures you a toe-tapping show, with something for everyone.
